Governance

The Breast Cancer Research Trust Board of Trustees is responsible for corporate governance. The board guides and monitors business affairs, including approval of the distribution of research funds as recommended by the Scientific Advisory Panel.

Hilary Lewis • Chair

Hilary is a qualified accountant and completed an MBA in 1994. She worked for House of Travel as e-commerce Director between 2004 and 2008, combining her passion for travel experiences with the online practicality of purchasing travel. Prior to this role, she held a number of senior roles within finance and IT at Air New Zealand over 13 years. Hilary is passionate about travel and exploring the world and is a keen writer and photographer. Currently she is exploring a number of opportunities to use her expertise in the development of other businesses.  

As Chair for The Breast Cancer Research Trust, she is using her leadership, finance, IT and strategic management skills to drive The Trust to achieving it's goal of finding a cure for breast cancer in the next decade.


Tony Moffatt • Deputy Chair

Tony has a career of 25 years specialising in Sales, Marketing and General Management.  He brings considerable experience, predominately from the travel and aviation industries and has lived and worked in markets across North Asia and most of Continental Europe.  He has enjoyed senior Marketing, Regional and Group General Management roles with Air New Zealand, the House of Travel Group, and the Australian owned company, Stella Travel Services.

Tony has skills and experience in the areas of Sales and Marketing, strategic thinking and planning, general commercial acumen (including joint venture companies) and significant people management.

He has been a director of a number of companies where the above skills have been highly valued.

The loss of his wife to Breast Cancer gave Tony an understanding of the enormity of the disease and the effect it can have on so many people and hence he has a very real and committed passion to bring all his skills and energy to support the goals of The Breast Cancer Research Trust.

Tony is currently Deputy Chair of The Breast Cancer Research Trust.


 Carolyn Hobson 

A communications specialist with international experience in the healthcare and entertainment sectors, Carolyn has intensive communications experience with a particular aptitude for strategy development and issues management, sponsorship and internal communication, and currently leads multi-disciplinary account teams for NZ PR agency Consultus.

Carolyn is very excited about the opportunity to contribute these skills to The Breast Cancer Research Trust and to work with the extensive network of outstanding volunteers who have made the Trust what it is today.


Dianne McAteer

 Dianne McAteer comes to The Breast Cancer Research Trust with 17 years experience in marketing and  general management in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Travel and  Health Sectors in New Zealand. She has worked in senior marketing and general management roles for businesses such as Cadbury, Sealord, Visique Optometrists and the House of Travel Group. Responsible for the Sponsorship portfolio with the Trust, Dianne is charged with developing mutually beneficial relationships with sponsors at all levels, to ensure that the Trust has a sustainable flow of funding for the critical research projects which will deliver a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime.     


Elizabeth Brown

Elizabeth specialises in brand development strategy and runs The Brand Direction Group, a research based business launched in 1997 and operating in New Zealand and Australia. This business and Elizabeth's team work with some of New Zealand's largest FMCG brands, identifies and steers the basis on which a brand needs to connect with New Zealanders and New Zealand women in particular.  Elizabeth's background combines extensive experience in advertising, predominantly with Clemenger BBDO in Australia, and the more formal area of qualitative research and consumer/brand behavior which she moved on to at Colman Brunton in New Zealand, before establishing The Brand Direction Group. She is vision and change-oriented, values empowerment for her clients, and enthusiastically supports driving The Breast Cancer Research Trust, its goal and its future in the same way.


Mr John Harman • MBChB FRACS Breast and General Surgeon

Founding and current Trustee of The Breast Cancer Research Trust. John Harman graduated from Otago University and is now a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

In November 1993 he set up New Zealand's first breast centre in Auckland. John is a director of the St Marks Group, which has been instrumental in leading women’s health issues and in particular breast cancer management in New Zealand. Internationally, he is a member of the following: American Society of Breast Disease • American College of Surgeons • Breast Society International Breast Cancer Study Group. In 1999 he was successful in his efforts (alongside other people in the field) in lobbying the Government to set up a nationwide screening programme. Subsequent to that, he set up New Zealand's largest screening programme which currently screens over 35,000 women per year.

John’s research interests include ultrasound, screening ultrasound of the breast, breast cancer reconstruction and psychosocial support for breast cancer patients. In 1999 he was awarded entrepreneur of the year for the service industry, a nationwide award presented by Ernst & Young in recognition of services to the community.
